History: | Probably named by W. H. Dall, U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS), in 1883 for Henry Villard, 1835-1900, American journalist and financier. The name was published in the 1883 Coast Pilot (p. 199). Henry Villard was born in Germany and came to the United States in 1853. He was a newspaper reporter and reported the Lincoln-Douglas debates. He also was a Civil War correspondent. |
